CHART: Indonesia's Smartphone Market Declined 11.9% YoY in Q1 2023
Indonesia's smartphone market faced a slowdown in the first quarter of 2023, experiencing an 11.9% year-over-year decline and a 7.2% quarter-over-quarter decline, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).
This decline was attributed to consumer preferences shifting towards clothing, food, and travel purchases, rather than electronic devices amid a challenging economic environment.
According to the report, the majority of smartphone purchases in Indonesia fell within the <US$200 price category, accounting for 76% of the overall market. However, even this segment experienced an 8% year-over-year decline as consumer consumption decreased.
The mid-range (US$200 < US$600) segment also suffered, declining by 35% year-over-year. In contrast, higher-priced devices in the >US$600 category saw a substantial 71% year-over-year growth, with Samsung and Apple leading the way. Additionally, 5G smartphones witnessed a 38% year-over-year increase, constituting 18% of the total smartphone market in Indonesia, up from 11% in the same period last year.
The Techloy chart below shows the overall decline among Indonesian smartphone vendors, reflecting the reduced consumer purchasing interest. OPPO, however, managed to buck the trend with a 1.6% increase as it successfully navigated the challenging market conditions and captured consumer interest with its offerings.
