Instagram’s Spotify integration makes saving your favourite songs easy
With the potential exit of TikTok–the reigning champion of viral music trends--from the U.S. becoming more apparent, and the possibility of millions of music lovers on the platform suddenly looking for a new platform to discover their next favourite song, Instagram is already gearing up to fill that void.
The app has been rolling out features like "Add Yours Music" stickers, song lyrics in Reels, and music in Notes, making it clear that it wants to be the next hub for music discovery.
And now in its latest update, Instagram has introduced a game-changing integration with Spotify, allowing users to save songs directly to their Spotify favourites without ever leaving the app.
To be fair, TikTok already boasts this feature, where its users can save tracks to Spotify, Apple Music, or Amazon Music–a huge part of its appeal to music lovers. But, now with an uncertain future in the U.S.–if the proposed sell-off bill forces it out–Instagram’s new Spotify feature couldn't be better timed.
The process is simple. Once users link their Spotify account to Instagram, they can tap on a song, go to the song page, and with a single click of the Spotify “Add” button, the track is instantly saved to their Liked Songs playlist on Spotify—no extra steps needed.
Until now, Instagram users could only view related content for songs but had no easy way to save them for later listening. This feature changes that, making music discovery even more convenient.
While this feature may not be revolutionary, it adds to the argument that Instagram could become the new go-to for music discovery especially if TikTok exits the U.S.
This feature began rolling out globally on October 17, and the good news for music lovers is that it doesn’t require a Spotify Premium subscription. However, it’s currently limited to Spotify integration.
Spotify, for its part, has been building bridges with social media platforms for some time. For instance, Discord users can link their Spotify account to share music with friends, and even display what they’re listening to in real time.
This same feature is also set to come to Instagram with reports of the social media app already testing a “Listening Now Notes” feature, which would display the track a user is listening to on their Instagram Notes feed. This could serve as a low-key form of music promotion, giving artists and songs more visibility.
With millions of Instagram 2 billion users uploading videos every day—many featuring music—it’s no stretch to say the app is already a key player in music discovery. The new Spotify integration enhances this role, and if TikTok is forced to leave the U.S., Instagram is in a prime position to step up.
As Instagram and Spotify continue to strengthen their partnership, it’s clear both are betting big on the future of music discovery. With over 626 million Spotify users worldwide, this collaboration is poised to keep music fans engaged across platforms.
And while TikTok continues to fight the proposed U.S. ban, Instagram’s growing music capabilities and its tight integration with Spotify might just make it the go-to platform for discovering your next favourite song.
