Meta Changes Its AI Label for Photos Across Social Media

The new "AI info" label is now more encompassing and aligns better with user expectations.

Meta has decided to change its AI label for photos after it recently came under heavy criticism for erroneously tagging real photos with basic editing "Made with AI."

This flaw was pointed out by photographers and content creators who complained that the AI label was wrongfully discrediting their work on its social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.

Now, Meta, in a bid to address this issue, has decided to change its AI label from "Made with AI" to "AI info." The software giant stated that the "Made with AI" label did not align with people's expectations and didn't always provide enough context.

For example, some photos that included minor modifications using AI, such as retouching tools, could be flagged by its industry-standard indicators and then labeled as "Made with AI," when in fact they are real photos.

The new "AI info" label will now encompass photos that were made and/or modified with AI while matching people's expectations as the company's technology for detecting the use of AI in photos remains unchanged.

This means that photographers or content creators who use tools such as Adobe's Generative AI Fill to remove objects within their photos will still have the photos tagged with the new "AI info" label.

Right now, it is obvious that the new tag will not solve the problem of AI-generated photos going undetected, nor will it tell users how much AI-powered editing has been done on an image.

However, we believe that Meta can work with photographers and content creators to set reasonable guidelines that are fair while taking into consideration their photos that have not been altered, even if their editing tools have some generative AI element.
