Meta is testing its AI chatbot in India and Africa
Meta is seeking to try out more of its services in the developing regions to retain its users and assume a leadership position in the AI market.
Social media users in India and Africa would soon be able to access Meta's AI chatbot, as the tech giant is currently testing this feature with its Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger platforms in these regions.
This move comes after Meta failed to build and release AI tools when major tech companies like OpenAI were doing so. The tech giant believed that generative AI technology was not ready for prime time. OpenAI challenged this idea with the release of ChatGPT and proved Meta wrong, leaving it behind in the AI race.
According to TechCrunch data, Meta has over 500 million Facebook and WhatsApp users in India, making it its largest single market. In Africa, it has about 121 million Facebook and WhatsApp users, according to data from Statista.
These users make up the developing market and have been witnessing more consistent growth than users in the developed market, which is why Meta is seeking to try out more of its services in the developing regions to retain its users and assume a leadership position in the AI market.
Currently, users in some parts of Africa have confirmed that Meta's AI chatbot is available on their WhatsApp applications as the company plans to release the next version of its open-source large language model, Llama 3, within the next month.
