Meta officially pulls the plug on Quest Pro sales
Even with a price drop, the Quest Pro continued to struggle in the market.
When Meta launched its Quest Pro in October 2022, it was positioned as the successor to the Quest 2. It promised exciting features like full-colour passthrough, eye-tracking, and enhanced face tracking, which generated a lot of buzz at the time of its launch.
However, the price tag of $1,499 immediately made it out of reach for many. For comparison, the Meta Quest 2 had been priced between $300 and $400, making it a much more affordable option for the average consumer.
Unsurprisingly, the Quest Pro didn’t sell as quickly as Meta had hoped, prompting the company to cut the price to $999 in March 2023. Even with the price drop, the Quest Pro continued to struggle in the market. Meta had announced in a blog post during the launch of the Meta Quest 3S that it would be selling its remaining Quest Pro headsets until they were gone.
Now, just over two years after its launch, the Quest Pro has been discontinued and is no longer available for purchase on the Quest Pro order page.
The Quest Pro’s hefty price, combined with its bulky design and limited appeal, made it hard to justify for most consumers and is likely what led to its decline in sales.
This situation mirrors what Apple faced with its Vision Pro, which launched at an eye-watering $3,500. Despite offering cutting-edge specs, the Vision Pro has faced similar difficulties in gaining traction in the mainstream market. Both devices, while impressive on paper, struggled to find a broad audience due to their high costs and niche appeal.
In contrast, the Meta Quest 3, released in October 2023, offers similar mixed reality capabilities at a far more accessible price of $499.99. The Quest 3 seems to now be Meta’s go-to VR headset, with the Quest Pro order page encouraging users to buy the Quest 3, demonstrating that, in the world of VR, delivering a great experience at an affordable price often wins out over raw power alone.
