Netflix is Ending Support for Older Apple TV Devices

Netflix subscribers would have to upgrade their Apple TVs to the 4K Apple TV if they want to continue streaming their favorite shows and movies from their TV devices.

Netflix subscribers might want to upgrade their Apple TVs, as the streaming giant recently sent an email to some users, announcing that it will stop supporting second-generation and third-generation Apple TV devices from July 31, 2024.

This move was finalized by Netflix because it believes that these generations of Apple TV devices no longer support the latest features and updates and instead want to focus its strategy on the latest Apple TV devices to give users the best viewing experience.

For context, the second-generation Apple TVs were released in 2010, and they came with a black body design and an aluminium remote control. The third-generation TVs, on the other hand, were released in 2012 and featured an upgraded A4 chip, supporting up to 720p resolution output.

Understandably, we can see why Netflix would want to channel its services to the latest Apple TVs available, given that, as with all technologies, the previous TV generations would get old with time and would no longer be able to meet current demands.

Right now, the 4K Apple TV is the best option available to 270 million paid Netflix subscribers across the globe who want to keep watching Netflix on their Apple TVs.

Netflix subscribers soar to half a billion
The subscriber surge can partly be attributed to Netflix’s aggressive crackdown on password sharing.

Also, the 64GB version of the 4K Apple TV is currently on sale at Verizon at a discount price of $90 from $120, so you might want to capitalize on this now if you want to continue streaming your favourite shows and movies on your Apple TV device.

Separately, there are rumours that the Apple TV+ app might be coming to Android users, as Apple puts out applications for Android software engineers to join the Apple TV app team to "design and architect a sophisticated application."

This expansion would allow Android users to enjoy critically acclaimed Apple TV+ originals as well as other streaming content, directly from a native app.
