New iOS 18 update brings satellite-powered emergency features to the UK and Canada
With these new additions, Apple is continuing its push to improve off-grid connectivity and emergency response capabilities worldwide.
Apple has taken another step towards bridging the communication gap, announcing the expansion of its satellite-based features to the UK and Canada.
With the release of iOS 18, users in these regions will gain access to a suite of tools designed to keep them connected even in the most remote areas.
One of the key features, Messages via Satellite, allows users to send encrypted text messages, emojis, and even Tapbacks through iMessage and SMS when they are off-grid.
Previously exclusive to U.S. users, this feature will now be available in Canada. The service comes bundled with iPhones, but carrier fees may apply, depending on the user’s mobile network.
In addition, Roadside Assistance via Satellite will launch in the UK, expanding beyond its initial U.S. availability. Apple has partnered with Green Flag, one of the UK’s leading roadside assistance providers, to offer this service.
Users experiencing car trouble in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage will be able to connect with Green Flag on a pay-per-use basis if they are not already members.
Like other satellite features, it works best in open spaces with a clear line of sight to the sky, although performance may be affected by dense trees or buildings.
Another major feature of iOS 18 is Emergency SOS Live Video. This functionality will allow users to share a live video feed or photos with emergency responders during an emergency call, giving dispatchers real-time visuals to better assess the situation.
Apple’s satellite services will remain free for the first two years with the purchase of an iPhone 14 or later, giving users immediate access to these life-saving features at no extra cost.
