🎮 Africa presses play on its gaming era

Big numbers, bigger potential — and the world is finally paying attention.

Gaming in Africa used to be a niche hobby—something a few people did in cybercafés or on old consoles. But now, it’s a billion-dollar industry in motion.

In just the past year, the continent’s gaming market grew to $1.8 billion, outpacing global growth nearly sixfold (via Carry1st and Newzoo). By the end of 2025, it’s expected to climb to $2.39 billion, with countries like Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa pulling in the most revenue.

This growth isn’t driven by pricey consoles or high-end PCs—it’s mobile all the way. Affordable smartphones, easier internet access, and frictionless mobile payments have brought gaming to the masses. Out of 349 million African gamers, 87% are playing on their phones.

And now, the rest of the world is paying attention. Tencent Games and other global players are investing in the region, while local studios are finally getting space to tell African stories. For gamers, that means more games made with them in mind.

The "mother continent" isn't just logging on; she’s pressing the play button on a whole new level.
