Is Nigeria ditching WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is more than a mere messaging app; it has become the digital artery for most people's economic and social livelihood.

So, when reports of the potential exit of WhatsApp from Nigeria over a data privacy-related fine by the country's competition and consumer protection watchdog broke this week, imagining a Nigeria without WhatsApp became a chilling prospect for me.

Much more than the fact that social interactions would be impacted, as WhatsApp has become the primary means of staying connected for many, it would mean the end of life for many businesses, particularly small merchant enterprises using the platform as a channel for reaching customers and generating sales.

Beyond the direct impact on businesses, the broader economy would also suffer. It's a standoff that highlights the delicate balance between fostering innovation and ensuring consumer protection.
