OpenAI's flagship language model, ChatGPT, has not only captivated the public imagination but has also become an indispensable tool for businesses across various sectors.

The model’s ability to generate human-quality text, translate languages, create varied content, and provide informative answers has made it a game-changer.

According to a company report, these capabilities have seen it surpass one million paid business users, a rise from the 600,000 users it had in April, underscoring a rapid market adoption.

The accomplishment follows closely on the heels of another milestone, with OpenAI's user base doubling to 200 million weekly users since last November.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Dominates AI Market, Hits 200 Million Weekly Users
As noted by the AI company, a key driver of this growth is the introduction of GPT-4o Mini – a more affordable version of OpenAI’s flagship model

A key driver of OpenAI’s success is its strategic focus on developing enterprise-specific products. Its business ecosystem, including ChatGPT Enterprise and Team, as well as its ChatGPT Edu product, offers tailored features, enhanced security and prioritization, and dedicated support, helping create appeal and build confidence among businesses.

Moreover, OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft has provided significant resources, expertise, and market access. Microsoft's Azure cloud platform has been instrumental in scaling ChatGPT's infrastructure and making it accessible to a wider audience.

Beyond user growth, OpenAI is tracking how businesses leverage ChatGPT to boost productivity. A recent survey of 4,700 business users revealed that ChatGPT Enterprise, Team, and Edu have contributed to a 92% increase in productivity.

To tap on this momentum, the company is reportedly working on developing new LLM AI models, including a reasoning-focused Strawberry and a new flagship LLM dubbed Orion which could further enhance its capabilities and attract additional customers.

To capitalize on this momentum, OpenAI is reportedly developing new AI models, including a reasoning-focused model called “Strawberry” and a new flagship model, “Orion,” which are expected to further enhance capabilities and attract additional customers.

According to The Information, internal talks at OpenAI discussed subscription prices ranging up to $2,000 per month. It remains unclear if this increase would impact the current $20 ChatGPT Plus subscription or the free tier used by hundreds of millions of users.

The talks come amid concerns over the company’s financial sustainability. The company hopes that higher subscription costs will help offset the massive operational expenses required to power its large language models, which are estimated to run up to $7 billion annually, along with $1.5 billion in staffing costs. OpenAI is projecting losses of $5 billion and could potentially file for bankruptcy within the next year.

However, an upcoming round of funding, with potential investors like Apple, Nvidia, and Microsoft, could delay such drastic measures and may value the company at $100 billion.

OpenAI reportedly in talks for new funding round at $100 billion valuation
If successful, this would make OpenAI not only one of the most valuable AI startups in history, but also a dominant force in the broader tech landscape.
