Paga, Nigeria’s version of MPESA announced today that its users can now fund their Paga account by using the MasterCard or Verve card option.

Before now, Paga users were expected to physically go to the bank to fund their Paga accounts before they can make money transfers and pay bills from their mobile phones.

With this new card payment introduction, Paga users who wish to fund their accounts can simply visit the Paga website, click on “Deposit” and at the top of the page that comes up choose which option to use their MasterCard or Verve card.

After entering the amount you wish to fund your account, enter your Paga PIN then click on “go”. A page will pop-up where you can select either MasterCard, Verve or InterSwitch and enter your card details and then press “pay”.

Once you’ve clicked the “Pay” button, you’ll get a confirmation page letting you know if your account was charged successfully.

The mobile payments service also works on the most basic SMS-enabled phones and on all mobile networks.

Paga currently has over 37,000 users and has processed over US $1.6 million in volume, that is over 40,000 transactions since February 2011.

Paga, founded in 2009, is a home-grown money transfer service with a mission to deliver innovative and universal access to financial services for all Africans.
