Senegal bans TikTok amid political unrest
Social media platform TikTok has reportedly been suspended indefinitely in Senegal, its first ban in Africa.
But unlike the regulatory issues TikTok has faced in other parts of the world, such as data privacy concerns and content moderation, the suspension in Senegal appears to be politically motivated.
The decision to suspend TikTok comes amid a fierce power struggle between the country's President Macky Sall and opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, which has created a tense and unstable political climate in the country leading to violent demonstrations and raising concerns about the country's stability.

As a response to the escalating situation, the Senegalese authorities have taken the step of blocking internet access in the country. Its communications minister, Moussa Bocar Thiam, also used a similar justification to block TikTok until further notice, citing concerns over the use of TikTok to spread "hateful and subversive messages."
However, the decision to block TikTok has faced criticism from some citizens who argue that the app also serves as a valuable platform for learning and online commerce, with others expressing frustration over the inconvenience caused by the internet blockage to their daily activities and financial transactions.
The government's decision to block TikTok is seen by some as an attempt to control the narrative and prevent the spread of dissenting voices. As political tensions continue to simmer, Senegal previously known for its political stability, may need to explore other effective measures to address the current unrest in the country.
