At roughly nine months old, Threads, Meta's social network competitor to X (formerly Twitter), has reached a milestone of 150 million monthly active users, a significant increase from the 130 million reported in February 2024 and 100 million in October 2023.

This meteoric rise, revealed by Mark Zuckerberg at Meta's recent Q1 2024 earnings call, has left many, including Twitter (now X) scratching their heads.

Launched in July 2023, Threads kicked off its launch with some serious momentum thanks to its connection with Instagram and has continued on a steady growth as it entices news users by building out its feature set.

So far, the app has made additions like a web app, keyword search, trending topics, an edit button and even a multi-account support. Additionally, it recently launched a test feature allowing users to automatically archive their posts after a set time.

Threads also took a step towards interoperability in March by integrating with ActivityPub, allowing users to connect to the Fediverse (a network of independent servers). This lets U.S. users over 18 share their posts on other platforms like Mastodon.

Looking to continue its growth trajectory, Meta has plans to expand functionality and is looking to release its API to developers by June, fostering the creation of new experiences within the social network. However, it's unclear if full-fledged third-party clients will be supported.

With access to 3.24 billion daily active people (DAP) across the Meta family of apps and a slew of upcoming functionalities set to hit the platform, Threads is poised to rival industry titan Twitter in the near future.
