Social Media Platform X Introduces AI News Snippets

Social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has announced a new feature powered by Grok(a generative artificial intelligence chatbot) for its 640000 premium tier users to view trending news stories relevant to them in various categories.

This feature, “Stories on X,” was rolled out after an initial post from the platform’s engineering account detailing how Stories on X would work. Although this feature is only available on iOS and the web, expectations are optimistic for Android users to get the AI-generated summaries on their For You tab.

According to X, the feature relies on Grok to generate text snippets based on user posts. Some of these can be more news-related than others or based on descriptions of talks taking place on the site itself.

While a few prominent players, such as OpenAI and Google, now dominate the AI industry, XAI chatbots might have found a way to compete.

However, a recent controversy involving Grok publishing a false story accusing NBA star Klay Thompson of a “bizarre brick-vandalism spree,” raises questions about reliability. X even acknowledges this limitation, with a disclaimer stating "Grok can make mistakes" and encouraging users to verify its outputs.

Despite these concerns, X CEO Elon Musk in his discussion with Big Technology's Alex Kantrowitz on the future of AI news on the platform, envisions the platform as a "real-time synthesizer" of news and social media reaction.

Whether this vision translates to a revolution for X remains to be seen. Ultimately, user trust in the accuracy of AI-generated content will play a crucial role in the feature's success.
