Private space investment declined in 2022 amid global economic downturn

Following a record year in 2021, private investment in the space sector declined by 58% to $20.1 billion in 2022, the lowest annual total since 2015, according to a new Space Investment Quarterly report from the firm Space Capital.

The report cited several factors for the pullback, including an inflationary environment, a challenging investment environment, and a continued economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

While early-stage investments proved to be resilient, decreasing only 4% YoY with over 277 deals closed, the large decline came in late- and growth-stage companies.

SpaceX maintained its strong momentum, raising $2.0 billion in 2022, setting the company's second-highest annual fundraising record, after raising $2.6 billion in 2020.
