SpaceX is on the verge of revolutionizing satellite internet once again with the upcoming launch Starlink Mini, a scaled-down version of its satellite internet dish designed for broader accessibility.

Starlink's initial success stemmed from its ability to deliver high-speed internet to remote and underserved locations. Building on this momentum, SpaceX is working to expand its Starlink internet service offerings to be even more accessible in a new ultra-portable Starlink mini dish.

While the idea of a mini-dish isn't new, having been approved by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) last year, recent updates suggest the product is nearing market readiness.

A recent post by Oleg Kutkov on X (formerly Twitter) shows a render of the new mini Starlink, measuring 11.4 inches by 9.8 inches. The key differentiator of the Starlink Mini is its compact size, which includes a built-in router and an Ethernet port. Roughly the size of a small laptop, the Mini Starlink is designed for portability.

Replying to the post, Elon Musk commented that the portable Mini Starlink can fit in a backpack and can be set up in just five minutes. He also shared a speed test, showcasing 100Mbps download speed and 11Mbps upload speed. While these speeds might not match the full-size dish, the numbers suggest that the Mini is more than capable of handling most daily Satellite internet activities, including streaming 4K video and making video calls.

He also noted that the Starlink Mini will be priced at roughly half the cost of the standard dish, translating to a potential price range of $149 to $249.

The blend of affordability and portability positions Starlink Mini as a transformative option for a broader market, particularly those in remote locations or those who prioritize mobility over raw speed.

SpaceX Targets Fall Launch for Cellular Starlink Service
This “direct to cell” service aims to deliver internet connectivity to cell phone users in areas with poor or no service (cellular dead zones).

Regarding availability, Musk mentioned that the Starlink Mini would start rolling out to select areas within the next few months, although specific details remain under wraps.

Overall, this strategic initiative aims to make Starlink more affordable and accessible by reducing production costs while still delivering capable internet speeds,

Ultimately, this move is part of SpaceX’s broader strategy to expand its user base up from the current 3 million as of May 2024 according to Teslarati, further solidifying its position in the satellite internet market.

📊 The most and least expensive places to buy Starlink in the world
Starlink, the satellite internet broadband service owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, boasts connections to more than 2.3 million people in over 70 countries, and several other markets around the world – with the capability of delivering internet speeds of up to 150Mbps in any location in the world.
