It looks like Spotify’s AI Playlist builder is gaining traction, with the company noting that users have created “millions of playlists they enjoy” since its launch in April 2024.

Previously available only in the UK and Australia, this feature is now expanding to Premium subscribers in the US, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.

The tool, however, is still in beta and currently only available on mobile. As Spotify fine-tunes this feature, many are hoping it will eventually expand to other platforms and regions.

How to use Spotify's personalized AI Playlist

  • To explore the tool, head to the Spotify mobile app
  • Tap the “+” button in the “Your Library” section
  • Select “AI Playlist.”
  • Enter a description like “upbeat songs for working out” or “chill music for a rainy day,” and the AI will generate a 30-song playlist.

There’s also room for fine-tuning, so you can adjust genres, artists, or specific moods to better match your tastes. If you love curating playlists, this could reduce the time spent hunting for tracks.

It will allow users to generate a playlist based on written AI prompts.

Meanwhile, competitors like YouTube are also making moves into AI playlists.

For example, YouTube Music is testing an AI-powered feature called “Ask for music any way you like,” which allows users to create personalized radio stations using text prompts or voice commands.

The feature aims to rival Spotify's AI DJ, which launched last year, by offering a more interactive and flexible way to generate custom playlists.

With over 626 million monthly listeners, Spotify’s focus on enhancing music discovery is evident, but it will be interesting to see how these developments play out as more competitors leverage AI to redefine user experiences.

For now, though, the AI Playlist Builder is rolling out gradually in the new countries. Whether it will roll out globally remains to be seen.
