Telegram has kicked off the new year with a host of new features designed to make the platform safer, smarter, and a little more fun.

One of the standout features is its new approach to verification. Telegram is now allowing trusted third-party organizations or authorities, such as food-quality regulators or educational consortiums to verify accounts within their fields.

Instead of the classic blue checkmark, verified accounts will sport unique icons representing their industries – like a carrot for a food chain or a book for an educational institute. Each verified account will also include a note explaining who verified it and why.

This approach aims to reduce scams and misinformation by creating a decentralized system of trust. Telegram sees this as a safer alternative to platforms like X (formerly Twitter), where paying for verification has blurred the lines between legitimate accounts and impersonators. Organizations can use Telegram’s Bot API to manage this verification process, adding their logos to affiliated accounts to signal authenticity.

Message search filters

Beyond verification, Telegram is also adding message search filters to make it easier to navigate its sprawling network of chats and channels. The new search filter in the Chats tab lets users quickly sort messages from private chats, group conversations, or channels. This update is a small but significant improvement for users juggling multiple threads or hunting down specific messages.

Telegram is planning to build Crypto Wallets, Decentralized Exchange
Cloud-based messaging app Telegram has unveiled plans to focus on the essentials of the crypto market: decentralization. The new products are aimed at placing more decentralization in users’ hands. From digital gifts to collectible NFTs

In a nod to its blockchain roots, Telegram is also introducing a feature that lets users turn digital gifts into collectible NFTs. These gifts, purchased with Telegram Stars via the app, can be customized with unique backgrounds and icons. Once upgraded, they become tradable or auctionable on NFT platforms. This isn’t Telegram’s first foray into crypto. The platform has previously used cryptocurrencies for creator monetization and as a payment method for games and mini-apps.

Updates to emojis and QR code

Smaller updates round out the release, including emoji reactions for service messages, custom emojis for organizing chat folders (a perk for Premium subscribers), and an improved QR code scanner that redirects links to a preferred browser. Together, these tweaks aim to enhance the overall experience, making Telegram more intuitive and enjoyable to use.

The updates come as Telegram continues its upward trajectory. The platform recently hit 950 million monthly active users (MAUs). Its premium subscription service has attracted 10 million paying users, contributing to profitability in 2024, with revenue exceeding $1 billion.

By blending practical tools with creative innovations, Telegram is positioning itself as more than just a messaging app. If these updates are any indication, Telegram is ready to set the tone for the future of messaging in 2025.
