Threads introduces improved search features to compete with X and Bluesky
Now, users can enjoy more refined search results.
The battle among the big three mini-blogging platforms—X, Threads, and the most recent entry, Bluesky—has been heating up lately. All three platforms have been implementing new features or strategies to keep users engaged, such as X improving its misinformation-fighting system and Bluesky introducing stricter measures to address impersonation problems.
Now, Threads has announced a new addition to its platform: an improved search functionality. With this update, users can now refine their searches from just specifying keywords that are sorted by "top" or "most recent" to the ability to filter results by specific profiles or date ranges.
Admittedly, this isn't exactly new in the grand scheme of things, as both X and Bluesky have had similar features for a long time. So, in this regard, Threads is still playing catch-up.
That said, this update aligns with Threads' broader efforts to strengthen its position in the mini-blogging landscape. Threads still holds the record for the fastest platform to reach 10 million users, achieving the feat in just seven hours after launch. So, while it’s a bit surprising to see them only now introducing this feature, it's still a step in the right direction. Better late than never.
Despite being a late launch to the microblogging space, Threads holds the second position among the big three with 275 million monthly active users, trailing X, which has over 600 million, but ahead of Bluesky, which just recently hit the 20 million active users mark, according to Statista.
With updates like this, compared to Bluesky's fresh approach and the increasingly controversial decisions made by X, the gap between these three platforms may shrink or even disappear in the near future. Or we may end up seeing one of the other platforms snatch X's crown.
