Threads rolls out custom feeds to give users more control of their content

Custom feeds have long been a standout feature on Bluesky, and now Threads users can join in the fun. Meta has rolled out this highly requested feature globally, giving users more ways to tailor their experience beyond the default algorithmic “For You” feed and the chronological “Following” feed.

The move comes just days after Meta began testing custom feeds, suggesting either a successful trial or a desire to counter Bluesky’s growing momentum.

With custom feeds, Threads users can build personalized streams around specific topics or curated profiles, making it easier to track what matters most. The feature allows you to search for a topic, tap the three-dot menu near the search bar, and select “Create new feed.”

From there, you can refine their feed by adding more topics or individual accounts. Up to 128 custom feeds can be created and pinned to the home screen for easy access. Desktop users get the added benefit of a column-based layout, making it easier to view multiple feeds at once—reminiscent of tools like X Pro (formerly Tweetdeck).

But an “activity status” feature ignites concerns about privacy and safety.

This move appears to be as much about responding to user demand as it is about countering the rise of Bluesky, which has been gaining momentum with its own custom feed capabilities. The decentralized platform has grown rapidly, surpassing 20 million users and reportedly adding over a million new signups per day.

However, Threads remains the dominant player in the space, with over 275 million users and steady growth at a similar pace. While Bluesky’s rise is impressive, Threads continues to leverage its integration with Instagram and Meta’s massive ecosystem to maintain its lead, positioning it as a strong competitor in the race for users disillusioned with X(formerly Twitter).

For users, the introduction of custom feeds is a win. It marks a shift toward greater personalization and gives people more control over their social media experience. As platforms like Threads and Bluesky compete, users can look forward to even more features aimed at enhancing how they connect and engage with content.

With custom feeds and an ever-expanding set of features, Threads is doubling down on personalization and functionality. Whether it’s building a curated feed around your favorite topics, posting polls to engage followers, or editing posts for clarity, Threads offers tools to make the platform your own.
