UK government says DeepMind, OpenAI, and Anthropic have agreed to open up their AI models

Google DeepMind, OpenAI and Anthropic have agreed to open up their AI models to the U.K. government for research and safety purposes, according to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during an announcement at London Tech Week on Monday.

In his speech, Sunak said that AI will transform areas such as education and healthcare while adding that semiconductors, synthetic biology and quantum would be key areas of focus for the U.K.

Meanwhile, Anthropic and OpenAI recently opened up their European headquarters in the U.K., and Palantir announced it was setting up an AI research hub in the U.K. last week.

In March, Techloy reported that the UK government invest £900 million ($1.1 billion) towards developing a cutting-edge supercomputer, to create its own GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) AI model, as part of a broader artificial intelligence strategy that aims to establish a new AI research body in the nation.

While it is not clear what the U.K.'s plans are about AI regulation, Sunak notes that the country wants to be “not just the intellectual home, but the geographical home of global AI safety regulation."
