TikTok hits 150 million monthly active users in the United States

Short video-sharing platform TikTok says it has reached 150 million monthly active users in the United States, nearly half the country's population, and up from 100 million users in 2020.

TikTok is currently faced with growing pressure in the US following the call by senators for a nationwide ban on the mobile app. This is a result of the reported fear by the US government on grounds that their data is being shared with the Chinese government, serving as a potential threat to its national security.

Many media reports have stated that Senate Intelligence Committee Chairperson, Mark Warner is currently cosponsoring the legislative bill to give the government more powers to ban TikTok as he believes that US data on TikTok is unsafe.

According to a statement, TikTok has spent more than $1.5 billion on rigorous data security efforts to protect the national security of its users and host country as it is paramount and the call for the ban would not solve the problems at hand.

The new figure on the rise in users is a sign of the app’s spread popularity, especially among young Americans. A handful of TikTok creators and users are expected in Washington this week in protest to the ban of the mobile app.
