Truecaller can now answer calls in your own voice
Mobile phone users who have the Truecaller app installed no longer need to stress over calls, as Truecaller's AI-powered assistant now has a "Personal Voice" feature that lets it answer calls in the user's voice.
This comes after Truecaller partnered with Microsoft to use its Personal Voice technology introduced in November as part of Azure AI speech.
Now, Truecaller's Assistant, which is available to paid users, can replicate users' voices to greet and respond to callers. To use the new feature, you will need to give your consent to the assistant, after which you record a few seconds of a script in your voice to create the digital copy.
However, to ensure transparency, Truecaller has restricted your ability to customize the initial greeting when using the personal voice feature so that your callers can know that they are interacting with a digital version of you.
The smartphone application is wary of the potential misuse of voice cloning technology, especially given the recent reports of scammers in India using AI to mimic the voices of acquaintances to trick people out of money, and wants to prevent that from happening with its Personal Voice feature.
It has confirmed that it is rolling out the Personal Voice feature across different regions, starting with the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, India, Sweden, and Chile, with other countries set to follow soon.
The feature will initially be made available to public beta users and later to its over 383 million monthly active users globally, per company data.
