Twitter users with 'legacy blue checks' will finally lose them by April 20
If you had previously been verified by Twitter with a legacy blue checkmark, you could lose the checkmark on April 20 – that is if you do not subscribe to Twitter's paid subscription service, Twitter Blue.
Twitter had initially set an April 1 date, but if a tweet by owner Elon Musk posted on Tuesday, which simply read: "Final date for removing legacy Blue checks is 4/20" is to be believed or taken seriously, then accounts that were verified under the previous criteria will not retain a blue checkmark unless they are subscribed to Twitter Blue.
The new date now suggests that the billionaire CEO is intent on moving ahead with the decision this time around as he pushes to generate revenue for the microblogging platform.
Before this announcement, the company had changed the label shown when someone taps on the verification mark to “This account is verified because it’s subscribed to Twitter Blue or is a legacy verified account", making it difficult for people to differentiate between Twitter Blue subscribers and legacy verified accounts.
After April 20, it is expected that the label would read: "This account is verified because it’s subscribed to Twitter Blue".
