Highlights:

  • Apple managed to increase its market share, although its shipments experienced a year-on-year decrease.
  • Samsung's market share remained relatively stable at 27%.
  • Motorola and TCL, although holding a smaller share of the overall market, experienced some growth.

Smartphone shipments in the US experienced a significant decline of 17% in Q1 2023, compared to the previous year. This drop was attributed to factors including OEMs addressing high channel inventory and a decrease in consumer demand due to macroeconomic pressures, per a Counterpoint research report.

Uncertain economic outlook and inflation continue to have a significant impact on the US smartphone market, leading consumers to postpone their smartphone purchases and hold onto older devices longer.

Despite the overall decline, Apple managed to increase its market share, although its shipments experienced a year-on-year decrease. Its market share rose to 53% in Q1 2023, up from 49% in Q1 2022.

Meanwhile, Samsung's market share remained relatively stable at 27%, while Motorola and TCL, although holding a smaller share of the overall market, experienced some growth.
