Users can now reply to chats on Instagram Broadcast Channels
Creators can choose to enable this in their channels allowing for a more community-like experience.
Instagram is the third most popular social media platform in the world, boasting 2.11 billion active users each month. Despite its popularity, the platform has faced several operational flaws over the years, leaving some users frustrated.
However, Meta seems to be aware of these issues and has been on a streak of making improvements. From addressing the annoying "rug pull" effect where videos randomly refresh, to letting users reset their entire recommendations algorithm, Instagram is working hard to refine its user experience.
Now, Instagram has made another big change: enabling replies in Broadcast Channels, finally allowing a two-way stream of communication between creators and their followers.
Broadcast Channels, introduced last year, were initially a one-way communication tool, allowing creators to send messages to their followers but without the option for followers to respond. This setup made it difficult for creators to engage directly with their audience.
However, Meta has listened to feedback and made a significant update. Creators can now activate replies in their broadcast channels, allowing followers to respond to posts and participate in conversations. Replies are neatly nested under the original message, helping to keep conversations organized.
This new feature turns broadcast channels into a more interactive space, making it feel less like a one-sided announcement board and more like a community conversation.
Along with replies, Instagram is rolling out "Prompts" to encourage further interaction. Prompts allow creators to post questions or statements designed to spark conversation, like asking followers what they’re grateful for today or to share a favourite recommendation.
Followers have 24 hours to respond with either text or photos, and they can like other responses. These features bring Instagram’s Broadcast Channels closer to the real-time, community-driven engagement seen on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Discord.
What sets Instagram apart is its ability to keep things organized, with all replies grouped under the original message, allowing creators to moderate discussions easily. Plus, the addition of new metrics, like total interactions and story shares, gives creators insights into their audience’s engagement. Meta even provides personalized guidance to help creators boost their channels.
