WhatsApp Introduces Message Pinning Feature
WhatsApp is introducing a message-pinning feature that will allow you to pin a message to the top of your chats for up to 30 days.
The feature, already available in Meta's Facebook Messenger app, enables users to long-press on a message and tap "Pin." The default duration is seven days, but users can choose between 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days.
Also, group chat admins have the option to make a pin visible only to other admins. This feature aims to enhance the organization of chats, making important information easily accessible.
Meta's Threads Finally Expands to the EU
Meta's Threads is now available in the European Union.
Previously off-limits due to regulatory constraints tied to the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), the Twitter-like platform is finally open to the 448 million people living in the EU.
Notably, Threads introduced the ability for users to delete their Threads account independently of their Instagram account, signalling an attempt to address the regulatory concerns raised by the DMA. Although posting and interacting still require an Instagram login, the option to explore without a profile is now available.
It is notable to mention that, Threads, despite its initial ascent in popularity, has faced challenges in retaining users. The EU launch is poised to bolster its user base or highlight any shortcomings that need addressing.
Microsoft Releases Copilot AI to Windows 10 Users
Marking a significant leap, Microsoft is bringing the Copilot feature, previously exclusive to Windows 11, to Windows 10. The latest Release Preview version of Windows 10 is now available to users, offering a glimpse into Copilot's AI-powered capabilities.
Similar to its Windows 11 counterpart, Copilot in Windows 10 resides as a button on the right side of the taskbar, allowing users to access the AI-powered chatbot for queries and text generation. Meanwhile, some differences exist due to variations in available skills or actions between the two operating systems.
Despite these enhancements, Microsoft emphasizes that Windows 10's current version, 22H2, will be the final one, with no major updates planned. The end of support for Windows 10 remains unchanged on October 14th, 2025.
Instagram Rolls Out Generative AI-Powered Background Editing Tool
Instagram, owned by Meta, has launched a new generative AI-powered tool called Backdrop, adding a fun and creative element to its platform.
The tool enables users to change the background of their Stories by selecting prompts. Users can tap on the background editor icon and choose prompts like "On a red carpet," "Being chased by dinosaurs," or "Surrounded by puppies."
Additionally, users can create their prompts to customize the background. Once a Story is posted with the new background, others can interact with it using a "Try it" sticker with the associated prompt.
Google Opens up Gemini Pro to Android App Developers
Announced last week, Google is now opening the doors for Android app developers to integrate the first version of its latest artificial intelligence model Gemini Pro into their applications.
Gemini Pro, designed for off-device processing on cloud servers, can now be seamlessly integrated into their existing Android apps without the need for creating a separate backend infrastructure using the Gemini API. This AI model is set to evolve over the next few months.
While Gemini Pro is currently available for free during the preview period, Google plans to introduce a paid service – similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT4, with higher requests per minute when general availability begins early next year.
