WhatsApp is taking action to combat spam calls in India

WhatsApp has taken action to combat the surge of spam calls in India by implementing back-end updates.

These updates were introduced in response to the recent increase in spam call incidents, which led to growing concerns and caught the attention of the Indian government. Users reported instances of harassment and scams through fraudulent calls originating from unfamiliar international numbers.

In a statement, a WhatsApp spokesperson highlighted the company's commitment to user safety and mentioned the various safety tools available within the app, such as the Block & Report feature.

WhatsApp has also enhanced its artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems to effectively reduce the frequency of spam calls. The spokesperson indicated that this enforcement effort is expected to reduce the current rate of spam calls by at least 50%, demonstrating WhatsApp's dedication to ensuring a secure user experience.

The malicious calls were reported to be originating from international phone numbers, including countries like Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

Scammers primarily used these calls to promote fraudulent job offers, later redirecting users to other messaging platforms like Telegram. Although it will take some time for the updates to fully mitigate the issue, affected users do not need to download any updates or make changes to the app.
