Yahoo! has officially launched its South African portal today which offers news, email, search, and other Yahoo!-related services.
Last month, we reported here on Techloy that Yahoo! would launch a South African news portal, a move that would put the company in direct competition with Microsoft’s Howzit MSN and Naspers, News24.
The portal features the trademark Yahoo! home page dedicated to South African news, local weather details, and links to other Yahoo! services.
It also syndicates South African-specific news from leading publishers such as Daily Maverick, Mail & Guardian, AFP, Association Press, and Reuters.
But perhaps the coolest feature is the free email addresses it offers on the .co.za domain.
While Yahoo! has played the late game in Africa, it’ll be interesting to see how they can stand the competition.
