YouTube warns against the use of its videos to train OpenAI's Sora
If so, it would violate the company's terms of use.
YouTube CEO, Neal Mohan has said that using YouTube videos to train OpenAI's text-to-video generator would be a violation of the platform's policies and terms of service.
Moran further stated that he has no first-hand information about OpenAI using YouTube's videos to train its video creation AI tool, Sora. But if that were the case, it would violate the company's terms of use.
YouTube has clarified that creators come onto the platform to upload content, believing that its laid down terms of service will be abided by. For this reason, it does not allow for things like transcripts or video bits to be downloaded as these would go against its policies.
So far, OpenAI has yet to comment on the matter. The company's Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal last month that she wasn’t sure whether Sora was trained on user-generated videos from YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.
According to Social Blade, there are around 63 million YouTube creators with over 113.9 million active channels. The platform generated $31.5 billion in revenue for 2023 with a 1.3% increase year-on-year.
